The Labour Party has officially launched its campaign for the Mt Albert by-election, with its candidate David Shearer focussing on the new motorway link and the super city as issues.
Mr Shearer told about 50 supporters at the Mt Albert War Memorial Park on Sunday that the electorate was held together by communities which were now under threat from the Government.
He said the Government's planned Waterview motorway and the SuperCity proposals meant communities would no longer have a say in the way they shaped and planned their futures.
Mr Shearer, a United Nations official, is hoping to win the seat which was vacated by former Prime Minister Helen Clark.
He said despite the seat always being held by the Labour Party he is not taking votes for granted.
The by-election will be held on 13 June. The Mt Albert electorate has been held by Labour since its formation in 1946.
