Prime Minister John Key says the Finance Minister will take another look at the deposit guarantee scheme.
The scheme is being called on for the first time, with Mascot Finance going into receivership on Monday, owing about $70 million to 2557 depositors.
Mr Key wants a closer look taken at whether the scheme is appropriate and whether it involves undue taxpayer risk.
He says Finance Minister Bill English will do that in the future.
In hindsight, Mr Key says it was probably wrong for Mascot Finance to have been able to enter the scheme.
