School food rule reversal stupid, say Greens

The Green Party says a decision by the Government to allow junk food to be sold in schools again is stupid.

The Government says a regulation that only healthy food options should be available for sale in schools is unnecessary and a bureaucratic burden.

Education Minister Anne Tolley says boards of trustees should make their own decisions about what are appropriate foods and drinks.

A recent Education Review Office report shows between 90% - 97% of schools were meeting the regulation.

Green health spokesperson Sue Kedgley says the rule, which had been in place for a year, was beginning to make a difference in many children's diets.
