Auckland City Council has approved spending of $18 million to upgrade streets around Eden Park in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
More direct access will be provided for cars and pedestrians going to the park.
Councillor Ken Baguley says Sandringham Road will also be widened in places and bus lanes added. Improvements will be made to footpaths and powerlines will be put underground.
Mr Baguley says the Kingsland railway station is also being expanded to handle more people. Construction is due to start next year.
Auckland Citizens and Ratepayers Association says the upgrade is a costly dud.
