Progessives Party leader Jim Anderton has been cleared by police of breaching the Electoral Finance Act.
The Electoral Commission referred two complaints to police about a newspaper advertisment and Mr Anderton's electronic newsletter before the election in November.
But Mr Anderton says police have now written to him saying no offences were committed.
He says the complaints were frivolous and the Electoral Commission should never have involved police.
Mr Anderton says the commission has been cavalier with people's reputations and allowed itself to become part of the political contest.
