Govt to tighten home detention laws

3:03 pm on 8 January 2009

The Government says it is determined to overhaul home detention and parole laws.

Corrections Minister Judith Collins says the public is concerned about the number of serious offences committed by people who are on parole.

She says sentences of home detention are given to too many violent, sex and drug offenders.

Mrs Collins says home detention was designed as an option for non-violent offenders, but under the previous Government it was given to many violent, sex and drug offenders, who posed a serious threat to the community.

She says restoring public faith in sentencing and parole will be a priority over the next 12 months.

Labour Party leader Phil Goff says New Zealand already has a high prison population and a tough sentencing regime.
