Hide's yellow jacket may have breached electoral law

9:19 pm on 4 December 2008

ACT Party leader Rodney Hide says a referral of his yellow jacket to police shows the stupidity of the Electoral Finance Act.

The Electoral Commission has decided that the jacket, which Mr Hide wore in protest, may be in breach of the law.

The commission says the jacket - which was emblazoned with the ACT logo - was an election advertisement.

Therefore, it should carry a promoter statement and be authorised in writing by the party's financial agent.

Police will decide if a prosecution should go ahead.

Mr Hide, the Minister of Regulatory Reform, says the referral is the result of bureaucrats who have little to do.
