The Armed Forces Canteen Council, which was set up in 1948, runs the canteens and shops on bases around the country.

Labour's defence spokesperson Phil Goff said the Government was transferring the service to the private contractor, Compass.

Mr Goff said the move did not make sense, and the canteen council's profits were used to bolster the Defence Force's welfare funds.

"They're taking our serving defence force personnel for granted, they're not listening to them, they've dropped this bombshell just before Easter when people don't even have a decent chance to give their feedback to the Government."

He said the Government was shaving costs at the expense of defence personnel, who had less than a fortnight to respond to the changes.
