Push needed to meet education goal

12:15 pm on 6 December 2014

The Ministry of Education expects to meet the Government's long-term target for NCEA achievement but says it must do better in order to meet its early childhood education goal.

The ministry's annual report for 2013-14 said the rate of improvement was higher than needed to meet the Government's target of 85 percent of 18-year-olds having NCEA Level 2 in 2017.

But it said the rate of children starting school with early childhood education was still below the level needed to meet the Government's goal of 98 percent by 2016.

The ministry said new initiatives would lift the participation rate.
