The Labour Party is promising to back the Manawatu region, if elected, and says it will consider a proposal to develop an inland port at Palmerston North.

Labour says the Palmerston North community has developed plans for a transport hub where containers could be stored and transferred between trucks and trains.

Leader David Cunliffe said on Tuesday the party would examine the merits of the proposal under its previously announced $200 million regional development fund.

He said it does appear to meet the strategic criteria for the fund and so would be a high priority after the election on 20 September.

Mr Cunliffe said there is a real buzz in Palmerston North about the potential to take the region forward.
