McVicar plans to run for Conservatives

4:36 pm on 7 August 2014

Garth McVicar has stepped down as the head of the Sensible Sentencing Trust, to run as a candidate for the Conservative Party.

The Trust describes itself as an advocate on behalf of victims of serious violent or sexual crimes in New Zealand, and providing a role in victim support.

Mr McVicar says a recent case involving the Director of Human Rights Proceedings and a battle over name suppression exposed problems with the bureaucracy in Wellington.

He says details about whether or not he'll stand in a seat, and the spokesperson role he'll hold, will be announced on Sunday.
