NZ to fund airport work in Kiribati

New Zealand is to spend $6.25 million to improve the main airport on Kiribati and is to improve tourism and support renewable energy projects on the group of islands.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully, who is in Kiribati, has also signed a joint declaration with the European Union and the government of Kiribati for technical co-operation on energy projects to help boost tourism and the fishing industry.

Kiritimati Island relies on imported diesel fuel to generate electricity.
