Prime Minister John Key has officially announced his trip to China later in March to help repair the market and reassure consumers following the Fonterra botulism scare.
The dairy co-operative had to recall products, including infant formula, from the shelves in 2013 after concerns it had been contaminated with a bacteria that can cause botulism.
Later tests showed that the products were safe.
Mr Key said on Monday he would travel to China to answer basic questions about the false alarm and how it was handled.
"My visit provides an opportunity to brief China's leaders on the outcomes of the government inquiry into the whey protein concentrate contamination incident.
"I'll be able to report to China's political leadership and assure Chinese consumers that the inquiry delivered a strong endorsement of the New Zealand food safety system."
Mr Key would also attend the international Nuclear Security Summit in the Hague. He leaves for China on 17 March.
