More councils want to ban wearing of gang insignia

A number of councils are pushing the Government to let them follow Whanganui's lead and ban the wearing of gang insignia in their areas.

A ban by Whanganui District Council came into effect last September. It prohibits the wearing of insignia in certain parts of the city.

Local Government New Zealand has been asked by up to 15 councils to act on their behalf and examine how they could put similar bylaws in place.

LGNZ has approached the Government asking it to give all councils the ability to create such bylaws.

But manager Michael Reid says the orgnisation has been told that these changes cannot be made because they are outside the scope of the legislation.
