New electoral law legislation introduced

Legislation that would allow online electoral enrolments has been introduced to Parliament.

Justice Minister Judith Collins says the Electoral Amendment Bill would improve services to voters, candidates and parties by allowing greater use of technology.

She says the bill would implement recommendations made by a select-committee inquiry into the 2011 general election.

It includes allowing for greater use of EasyVote cards to simplify and speed up vote-issuing at elections, and for full online enrolment for new or existing electors.

Loans to political parties would also become subject to similar disclosure rules to those for donations.
