The Government is canvassing various contingency plans as the deadline looms for the Christchurch City Council to keep or lose its authority to issue building consents.
International Accreditation New Zealand has warned the council its consenting powers could be revoked if it doesn't fix its processes and reduce the large backlog.
The council has until 5pm on Friday to respond.
Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson said on Thursday the Government is preparing for the possibility that the council will lose its authority.
