The United Future leader, Peter Dunne, says there is a need for some urgency in progressing an intelligence law change.
The Government wants to make it legal for the Government Communications Security Bureau to spy on New Zealanders, and also wants to increase the resources and powers of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security.
Mr Dunne said his party would support the legislation at least to the select committee stage, but won't commit further until he was satisfied it was workable.
But he said there was a need for some urgency, as the public needed to have confidence in the country's security agencies.
