Mr McCully says the visit will provide an opportunity for New Zealand to strengthen its relationship with an organisation which has been at the forefront of some of the most pressing international issues of the past two years, including Libya and Syria.

The minister will also visit other Middle Eastern countries including Bahrain, Turkey and Jordan for official talks.

He says he will use the visit to discuss New Zealand's bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council with his counterparts in the region.

Other talks will focus on regional security issues, as well as New Zealand's humanitarian assistance for Syrian refugees in Turkey and Jordan.
