Govt urged to seek end to discrimination in Australia

5:26 am on 7 October 2012

Labour says the Government must act to end discrimination in Australia against New Zealanders living there.

Since 2001, Australia has denied them the same welfare rights as other permanent residents.

Foreign Affairs spokesperson Phil Goff says he's hearing horror stories about New Zealanders who have lived and worked for years in Australia, and then been denied assistance when something goes wrong.

In one case, he said a man with a brain tumour could not get welfare support for his family.

Mr Goff is to meet the Australian High Commissioner next week to discuss the issue and plans to lobby the Labor government in Australia, but said the New Zealand Government also must do more.
