140k signature petition delivered to Parliament

Greenpeace has delivered a 140,000 signature petition to Parliament against the Government's plans for more oil exploration and coal mining.

About 40 protesters gathered as 26 boxes of petitions were presented to Green MP Gareth Hughes and Labour MP Phil Twyford.

Mr Hughes says it is one of the largest petitions to arrive at Parliament in many years, and he hopes the Government takes it seriously.

Greenpeace senior climate campaigner Simon Boxer told the crowd he had never seen a petition stir up so much public interest.

But Energy and Resources Minister Phil Heatley says it does not hold much sway with him because New Zealand needs jobs and natural resources should be put to use.
