Sharples explains fears

10:47 pm on 19 July 2012

Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples says he had fears that the Government might stage a foreshore and seabed-style extinguishing of Maori water rights.

Prime Minister John Key has now given an assurance that this will not happen.

Mr Sharples' comments follow a meeting on Wednesday night between party leaders and Mr Key over disagreements regarding Maori claims to water.

The meeting was held after the prime minister said the Government would not need to follow any findings by the Waitangi Tribunal on water rights.

Harawira comment

Mana Party leader Hone Harawira says the Maori Party has proven again it does not stand up for its principles.

He says the reality is that prime minister has not in fact withdrawn or apologised for his original comments.
