A Labour Party attempt to get the powers of the Serious Fraud Office curbed has been dismissed by Justice Minister Judith Collins, who says there is no evidence the office is abusing them.
Labour tried on Wednesday to get a change made to the Search and Surveillance bill to ensure the SFO would have to apply to a judge before searching businesses.
It says the SFO has been overzealous with its searches and its powers need to be constrained.
Justice Minister Judith Collins said that while Labour had discussed changes with her, she had not seen a proposal before Wednesday.
Ms Collins said the issue was too important to have a knee-jerk reaction.
Labour's amendment was rejected.
