A spokesperson for the families of those who died in the Pike River mine, Bernie Monk, says they are humbled by the news that Prince William will visit them in Greymouth.
Mr Monk says the visit will be an important part of the families' healing process.
Before speaking in Christchurch at next Friday's national memorial service for victims of the 22 February earthquake, Prince William will meeting families affected by the mine disaster, in which 29 men died last November.
The prince will be in New Zealand from Thursday to Saturday before flying to Australia to visit regions devastated by flooding and Cyclone Yasi.
Mr Monk's son Michael died in the Pike River mine disaster.
