The committee overseeing a trust for the families of the 29 men killed in the Pike River coal mine, says it will decide on Tuesday how to distribute some of the donations.

The Pike River Relief Fund Trust says more than $5.5 million has been donated or promised by various businesses, organisations and the public.

Rev. Tim Mora says the committee is working closely with the families and is keen to disburse some of the donations as soon as possible.

A series of explosions began in the mine on 19 November.
