The Shippers' Council says the Pike River disaster will have an impact on those who transport the company's coking coal to market.
The coal is trucked from the West Coast mine to a rail depot at Ikamatua, then taken to the Port of Lyttelton.
Forty thousand tonnes of coal has been exported in two shipments since the mine opened in 2008.
Those involved in moving it from the mine to markets are Solid Energy, KiwiRail the Port of Lyttelton and a shipping firm.
The Shippers' Council chair, Greg Steed, says it's clear the disaster will affect the supply chain.
In a small way, he says, having fewer coal trains will ease the pressure on the earthquake-damaged Port of Lyttelton.
