Prime Minister John Key has met the families of the 29 miners who died in the Pike River coal mine explosion.
The meeting took place at the Greymouth Civic Centre on Thursday.
Mr Key arrived shortly after midday and the families emerged from the meeting looking very sombre after about half an hour.
Mr Key expressed his personal condolences and later signed a book of condolences at the district council offices in Greymouth.
Later on Thursday, Grey District Council will hold a special council sitting to remember the loss of councillor Milton Osborne, one of the 29.
