New Caledonia party wants French HC to leave over Covid-19

New Caledonia's largest pro-independence party, the Caledonian Union, has asked the French High Commissioner and the local commander of the French military to leave the territory.

In an open letter addressed to all Caledonian citizens, the party president Daniel Goa accused them of failing to respect the Noumea Accord which passed health policy making to New Caledonia.

Mr Goa said the French military secretly rotated its personnel in disregard of the rules in force over the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said in the night to Monday, 62 French military personnel arrived, bypassing immigration, customs and health checks.

He also called for the suspension of all flights to New Caledonia until the emergency provisions drawn up in France are changed to exclude New Caledonia.

Earlier this month, France loosened its quarantine terms but imposed them also on New Caledonia, thereby invalidating the legal basis for New Caledonia's own strict provisions.

When Mr Goa warned of a possible collapse of the government over the development, the High Commissioner and the New Caledonian government issued a statement to say that New Caledonia's quarantine rules were unchanged.

He said if anyone successfully challenged their confinement based on the French rules, the locals would organise an appeal for ways to protect the population.

The dominant anti-independence alliance, which includes President Thierry Santa, dismissed the concerns, describing it as politicking and a sign of deep dishonesty.

While France had more than 28000 Covid-19 related deaths New Caledonia had none.
