N Caledonia police post threatened

The police officer in charge of a station in Lifou in New Caledonia has reportedly quit his position after threats of an occupation of the police post.

Local media say he sought and obtained a transfer following a demand by local chiefs that he be removed from We by last Friday.

The dispute stemmed from the way the security forces went about when they saw and arrested a chief's son to send him to prison on the main island.

The arrest caused anger because it was seen as an humiliating approach when the chief had earlier agreed to deliver his son to serve a year in jail.
