Sport: Participation success enough for Team Fiji in Glasgow

2:50 pm on 10 July 2014

The Fiji Olympic Committee says, after missing the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi, just being at this month's event in Glasgow is a success.

Fiji are sending 42 athletes to Scotland, to compete in athletics, judo, shooting, lawn bowls, swimming and weightlifting.

Their readmission to the Games was too late for it to enter teams in netball and rugby sevens, where the latter was considered a serious medal contender.

Chef de Mission Lyndall Fisher says they're just happy to be going at all.

"Just by being there, that's success enough for me at this stage and the medals will be a bonus. We did not have Glasgow on our spector at the beginning of the year and then we were very fortunate to receive, only about ten weeks ago, an invitation that we were able to participate so for all the sportspeople it's very exciting that they've got this competition on".

Lyndall Fisher says they're also thankful to the Commonwealth Games Federation for providing funding for their preparation, and for their build-up to the Youth Olympics.
