Fiji municipal councils urged to do more for dengue clean-up

4:43 pm on 19 March 2014

The Fiji government is urging municipal councils around the country to comply with the nationwide dengue fever clean-up by disposing of roadside rubbish.

The country is experiencing its worst outbreak of dengue since 1975, with twelve deaths and more than 11 thousand cases recorded since October.

The Ministry of Information says it has called on all people in Fiji to destroy areas that are likely to breed mosquitoes.

But it says despite concerns raised by the Health Ministry, piles of rubbish, which are prone to collect stagnant water that can breed mosquitoes, continue to be seen lying by the road for weeks.

It is calling on municipalities to take immediate responsibility in carting and disposing of the rubbish.
