Sport: PNG's Pini feeling primed ahead of third Olympics

Papua New Guinea swimmer Ryan Pini is hoping a stint of altitude training will give him the edge in the pool in London.

The 30 year-old will line-up in his favoured 100m butterfly event in his third Olympic Games appearance.

A coaching friend in China suggested he give altitude training a go and Pini says he's already feeling the benefits.

"We didn't really know what to expect but it turned out to be really beneficial so we decided to go back and it feels really really good, so it will be quite interesting to see how that comes out. Oceania Champs was a good lead-up competition as well. I'd just come back down from altitude so found it a little bit tricky but did some really good times there as well so I'm coming into the Olympics feeling fairly confident."

Pini says having achieved his aim of making the final four years ago his goals are a bit different now but he's determined to end his Olympic odyssey on a high.

I would really like to be able to get back down to my 51.6 sec time, my personal best time, which is what made the final last time at Olympics. That particular time sits at about fourth fastest in the world, this year, so to be able to get back down to that will really, definitely, put me in the finals - maybe even medal contention. I feel that I should be able to get back down to that level but it really comes down to that day.
