Quick action by a Palmerston North man has been credited with saving the life of 16-month-old girl who was inside a burning house.
The fire broke out at the property at about 7am on Monday.
Palmerston North fire officer Kerry Williams, who attended the call-out, says the child was rescued by a man who lived in a sleepout at the back of the property.
"We arrived probably about a minute after he got the child out of the room and I think that minute quite probably made the difference.
"Within another minute that room would have been unsurvivable, for sure."
