Police unhappy with motorcycle rally

Police in Tasman are critical of a motorcycle rally in the South Island this weekend, saying the event promotes dangerous riding and is a recipe for disaster.

They plan to pull over riders in the TT2000 that starts in Christchurch on Saturday - even if they are not breaking the law.

Police say the rally challenges riders to visit 150 locations across the South Island and, therefore, encourages speeding and makes for tired riders.

A rally organiser says riders are mostly middle-aged responsible people who may cover 2000km, at well under the speed limit.
