6:51 pm on 23 February 2012

Several roads are closed and rivers are rising after a day of heavy rain in Otago.

While rainfall has eased in the South Island region, motorists are warned to take care as there is flooding in many areas on Thursday evening.

The Pomahaka River in South Otago has recorded its highest flow since 1994.

Several roads are closed including Akatore Road, Greenvale Road, Winslade Road, Wooded Hill Road, Ardmore Road, Winslade Road and Paradise Flat Road.

It is expected they will be closed overnight on Thursday as some rivers are still rising rapidly.
