A gay community group wants Auckland Council to help fund a Gay Pride Festival.

The proposed $750,000, two-week festival in February next year would include a parade on Ponsonby Road, a gala concert and a party in the park.

The Auckland Pride Festival Committee is seeking about $300,000 from the council.

Spokesperson Gresham Bradley says the event would be a chance for the Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgender community to celebrate who they are.

Gresham Bardley says the committee will hear in March whether its application is successful.

Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development says 83 applications for funding have been received. The agency says only $1.9 million is available, and the applicants are seeking 10 times that amount.
