Lower Hutt battery recycler company to close

4:45 pm on 15 February 2012

Battery recycling firm Exide will close its plant in Petone, Lower Hutt next March with the loss of up to 40 jobs.

The company has been dogged by problems, including an explosion, a fire and two prosecutions for exceeding lead emission restrictions.

Exide says a Court of Appeal decision to permit the continued and unlimited export of used lead-acid batteries, means it has to close its facility.

Managing director John Cowpe says without a sufficient amount of raw material coming in, the company is unable to profitably operate the business.
