Laser ban wanted by pilots

5:25 am on 8 February 2012

The Airline Pilots Association wants the Government to ban imports of powerful lasers, due to an increase in the number of laser strikes against aircraft.

Association president Glen Kenny says laser strikes are a distraction for pilots and can make them temporarily blind.

The association wants the Government to introduce regulations to stop the devices being imported, and hold a public education campaign about the dangers of lasers.

Two teenagers are due to appear in court in Auckland on Wednesday charged with aiming lasers at three aircraft last month, including the Police Eagle helicopter.
