Police in Kaitaia say bones discovered by tourists at 90 Mile Beach will be forensically tested to determine whether they are human.
The bones were found on Tuesday morning in sand dunes on the beach.
Police say it is not uncommon for the bones of seals or whales to be found on Ninety Mile Beach and that is possibly what the tourists have uncovered.
