The Prison Chaplaincy Service has withdrawn its service from Mt Eden prison because of disagreements in the way it is being run.
Four chaplains left the Auckland prison in October last year shortly after SERCO took over the management.
SERCO says the chaplains had problems with sweeping changes to the size and make-up of the chaplaincy staff. Only two will be replaced.
The Prison Fellowship says SERCO is introducing its own chaplaincy management with fewer staff full time inside the prison, and more volunteers offering other types of services.
It says that type of chaplaincy service is not offered in any other prison, and many groups who work at Mt Eden are adopting a wait and see approach.
