Prisoners won't be charged over fishing trip

The Department of Conservation will not lay charges against a group of prisoners caught taking seafood from a marine reserve.

The six Hawke's Bay Prison inmates were taking part in the Whare Oranga Ake programme which helps prisoners reconnect with their culture before being released.

An outing of collecting seafood was planned for the group of prisoners, but they were taken to the wrong beach.

The group fished in Te Angiangi Marine Reserve, rather than Pourerere Beach, which is 10km north of the reserve.

DoC says inquiries have been completed and it is clear the breach was a genuine mistake.
