AOS callouts jump

8:21 pm on 17 January 2012

The number of armed offenders squad callouts has jumped over the past two years.

Between 1996 and 2009, armed offenders squads went to an average of 513 calls nationally each year.

But in the year ending June 2010 they attended 1040. And in the year ending July last year they were called on 992 occasions.

Police say the rise in callouts is due in part to the armed offenders squads taking part in more pre-planned operations, such as drug raids and execution of search warrants.
