Mountain tracks still closed

Contractors in Bay of Plenty are still working to clear slips on popular walkways on Mauao at Mount Maunganui, a year after it was forced to close after a three-day storm.

Sections of the mountain were washed away during a deluge in January last year.

About $1 million has been spent fixing walkways and moving debris.

Two of the tracks are still closed to the public because they are deemed too unsafe.

Park ranger Mark Ray says one of the easier walkways to the summit, the Oruahine Track, had only just been upgraded before it was ruined.

He hopes the track will be re-opened by the end of February.
