A man has died in Taupo during a swimming competition.
St John Ambulance says a 50-year-old man drowned at about 2.30pm on Saturday.
Swimming New Zealand says the man was a recreational competitor in their annual Epic Swim event.
It says about 400 swimmers are taking part in two days of competition which includes Olympic qualifying for open water swimming.
Swimming New Zealand's chief executive, Mike Byrne, has expressed sympathy for the dead man's family and gratitude to emergency services.
