Extra police in Wanaka

10:42 am on 31 December 2011

Extra police from Dunedin are in Wanaka to help cope with an anticipated increase in its population for New Year.

The town is usually home to about 8,000 but that is expected to swell to about 50,000.

The number of arrests for disorder has dropped dramatically since alcohol bans were put in place and police say recent years have been marked by a relaxed family atmosphere.

And about 50 extra officers are in Queenstown from Dunedin and Invercargill this weekend.
