Self-regulation wanted in parking sector

One of the country's largest parking enforcement companies wants to bring self-regulation to the sector to bring ''cowboys'' into line.

The New Zealand Wheel Clamping Company believes the money in parking enforcement will increase fivefold to $40 million over the next two years because of growing pressure on carparks.

Director Gordon Ward says Government regulation would be expensive and unwieldy and require an agency to enforce the rules.

Instead he is keen to establish an industry council with his competitors that would lay out rules to which members must adhere to belong.
