Shark spotted off Waikanae Beach

8:56 pm on 26 December 2011

Kapiti police have warned swimmers at a Waikanae Beach of a shark seen in the waters nearby.

The shark was first spotted by a woman who called the police just after 6pm on Monday, and described it as between two and three metres long.

It was seen swimming near the northern end of Waikanae beach, near Peka Peka, north of Wellington.

Police say most people at the beach had already spotted the shark and had chosen to not enter the water, but others were happy to continue to collect shellfish from the

shallow part of the beach.
