Efficacy of latest child abuse report doubted

7:50 am on 22 December 2011

Specialists in children's welfare doubt a new report into child abuse will bring about change, despite the report's author insisting it will make a difference.

The report was produced as part of a ministerial enquiry into the case of a nine-year old who was badly abused by her mother.

It was completed by the former Ombudsman Mel Smith and makes 13 recommendations to the Government.

The recommendations include bringing more Child Youth and Family liaison personnel into schools and mandatory reporting of suspected abuse and neglect.

But former Child Commissioner Ian Hassall says the report does not offer any new ideas.

And Jigsaw chief executive Liz Kinley also does not believe the report will result in dramatic changes.

But Social Welfare Minister Paula Bennett is hopeful the report will bring about change.

She told Morning Report the changes will go a long way to prevent children from slipping through the cracks of child protection agencies.
