Council housing blocks below earthquake strength

9:25 am on 21 December 2011

Six Wellington City Council housing blocks are below earthquake standard.

The Berkeley Dallard, Marshall Court, Arlington Tower, constable St flats, Newtown Park flats and Whare Ahuru flats have been assessed and fall below 34% of the current earthquake standards code.

The council says work is currently underway to upgrade the flats and any buildings which need strengthening are being prioritised in the first tranche of upgrades.

It says the costs for each building and strengthening option vary considerably.

Also identified in the latest list of under-strength buildings are the Opera House, the Basin Reserve Museum stand and Thistle Hall.
