Increased efforts to clear Manawatu Gorge

7:48 am on 17 December 2011

Efforts to open State Highway Three through the Manawatu Gorge, which has been closed by slips for nearly four months, are being stepped up.

The Transport Agency says two teams are working seven days per week at the slip, one from the top and one from the bottom.

Regional manager David McGonigal says wet weather has been a hindrance, but 250 truckloads of debris are being shifted every day.

NZTA hopes to have the road open again early in the new year.
