Killer's appeal dismissed

5:41 am on 17 December 2011

A man sentenced to prison for at least 15 years for the murder of a police officer, has had an appeal against his conviction dismissed by the Court of Appeal.

John Skinner, who was also found guilty of attempting to kill another police officer, shot Sergeant Don Wilkinson with an air rifle in South Auckland two years ago.

Skinner's appeal related to the admissibility of evidence, including relating to methamphetamine manufacture, firearms and gunshot damage at his house.

Other issues raised were the judge's direction to the jury about self-defence and not accepting provocation as defence.

In dismissing the appeal, the Court of Appeal said Justice Venning gave careful directions and was unimpeachable in his approach.

Time has been extended for an appeal against the sentence.
